Finding herself in neon dreams

Though media has often focused on the the Sixth World’s divide between humans and metahumans, there remains prejudice and hardship for anyone who doesn’t fit nicely into society’s little boxes, including among humanity itself. The destitute, the disaffected, and the just plain different still have their own very uphill battles to fight.

The Matrix afforded Nyx the opportunity for comaraderie and community the likes of which she never experienced in the physical world, and it became her second home, far from the forested desolation of Northern CalFree. Taking up the mantle of activism in college, she helped fight for the rights of those who, like her, didn’t feel they fit in with mainstream society, regardless of metatype, political affiliation, or country of origin. To her, everyone had the right to a safe and healthy life.

Her peticular brand of digital guerilla activism however, wasn’t quite as popular with the targets of her online campaigns, and she learned all too quickly that she had to be quick on the draw in the physical world as well as online, whether to defend those she stood for or to ensure she could keep up the good fight moving forward, staying out of law enforcement’s dirty hands. She picked up enough training—and cyberware—to be just as lethal with a pistol or rifle as when she was slinging code.

Her more extreme strikes against the corporations, policlubs, and other oppressive regimes got the attention of those working in the shadows, and soon she found herself funding her activisim through regular jobs helping corp suits wage war against other corp suits.

She met up with the rest of the team in mid-2073, and finding easy connection with the metahumans by her side, helped them rise to new heights and greatly expand their capabilities. Burned with the rest by Baker’s betrayal, Nyx was doubly wounded, finding that even her long-time activism contacts—her own physical and online communities—had believed his lies, cutting off all communication.

She not-so-secretly hopes that their return to the Emerald City will bring with it new opportunities to stand up for those whom society has seen fit to discard in its never-ending promotion of “normalcy.”
